Cụ thể, khoảng 8 giờ 15 phút cùng ngày, tại vùng biển cách Cảng cá Phú Hải, phường Phú Thủy khoảng 2km, tàu cá số hiệu BTh-95768 TS do ông Nguyễn Văn Tư (trú tại phường Phú Thủy) làm thuyền trưởng, khi đang neo đậu thì xảy ra sự cố rò rỉ khí gas dẫn đến cháy. Thời điểm xảy ra vụ việc, trên tàu có tổng cộng 21 người, gồm thuyền trưởng và 20 lao động.
Ngay sau khi nhận tin báo, Đồn Biên phòng Thanh Hải đã nhanh chóng phối hợp các lực lượng chức năng cơ động đến hiện trường, tổ chức cứu nạn, đưa toàn bộ thuyền viên vào bờ an toàn; đồng thời triển khai các biện pháp khống chế đám cháy. Đến 9 giờ 45 phút, vụ hỏa hoạn được dập tắt hoàn toàn. Vụ cháy không gây thiệt hại về người, tuy nhiên nhiều tài sản, ngư cụ trên tàu bị thiêu rụi, gây thiệt hại lớn về kinh tế.

Chiều cùng ngày, UBND phường Phú Thủy và đại diện Đồn Biên phòng Thanh Hải đã đến thăm hỏi, động viên các thuyền viên gặp nạn.
